Shipping pet insulin: what Vetsulin and ProZinc need in transit

Both major veterinary insulins carry the same transit requirement: 2–8°C (36–46°F), stored upright, never frozen, protected from light. That is the labeled storage for Vetsulin (Merck Animal Health, NADA 141-236) and ProZinc (Boehringer Ingelheim, NADA 141-297). Both are suspensions, which is why their labels also govern how the vial is handled — Vetsulin is shaken to a uniformly milky mix, while ProZinc’s label says, in capitals, do not shake or agitate.

In practice that means pet insulin moves in an insulated shipper with conditioned cold packs on expedited service, never across a weekend, with the freeze floor treated as seriously as the heat ceiling. On arrival: the vial should be cold to the touch, the refrigerant at least partly unspent, and the contents consistent with the label’s appearance language. On any doubt, the call goes to the dispensing pharmacy before the vial goes in the refrigerator.

A diabetic dog or cat is a refill customer for life, which makes insulin the product a pet pharmacy ships more often than any other refrigerated SKU — and the one where a single sloppy summer packout costs the whole relationship. The requirements are not secret. They are printed on the label, and the label is where every claim in this post comes from.

Everything in that table is label language, current on DailyMed as of this writing. Note what the labels do not say: neither publishes an hours-at-room-temperature allowance for transit, and neither authorizes any excursion outside the band. Whatever tolerance exists in your shipping program has to come from the general USP <659> controlled-cold framework — 2–15°C, 24 hours maximum, mean kinetic temperature at or below 8°C — not from the insulin label, which simply says refrigerate and do not freeze.

Suspensions raise the stakes

Both products are suspensions — insulin distributed in particles through a liquid, restored to uniformity before each draw. That is why the labels legislate handling with unusual specificity, down to opposite mixing instructions for the two products:

“Do not shake or agitate the vial.”

Two consequences for shipping. First, the label’s appearance standard — a uniform, milky or cloudy white suspension, no persistent clumps — is the only product-visible check anyone at the receiving end has, and both labels convert visible abnormality into a hard stop: do not use. Second, a formulation whose label prescribes exactly how it may be mixed is a formulation whose maker considered physical state worth controlling. A parcel network is an uncontrolled physical environment — temperature swings and handling shocks the label never contemplated. The packout controls the temperature half of that equation completely and cushions the rest. We stay strictly inside label language here: the labels define the storage band, the freeze prohibition, and the appearance standard, and that is all this post claims about the chemistry.

The freeze floor

Freezing is prohibited by both labels and is the failure a shipper causes most easily, because the refrigerant that protects against July is cold enough to freeze the vial it touches in any month. A frozen-then-thawed vial can pass a glance test; the clump check exists precisely because the damage is not otherwise visible. Conditioned refrigerant, a physical barrier between packs and product, and a winter configuration are the controls. The mechanics — identical for peptides and insulins — are in the freeze problem.

Why pharmacies ship insulin the way they do

Mail-order pet pharmacies converge on the same insulin shipping pattern, and their published policies show why. VetRxDirect’s shipping FAQ (2026) — representative of the category — commits to same-day dispatch for next-business-day delivery when an order and its prescription arrive before cutoff, but builds a fence of restrictions around anything that ships with cold packs:

Read as a system, the policy is a transit-time budget: dispatch early in the week, buy the fastest reliable service, refuse any lane where worst-case transit outruns the packaging. The packout has to close whatever gap remains, which is why hold time — 48 or 72 hours, tested, not estimated — is the number that decides whether a delayed shipment is an annoyance or a loss. Why did my insulin order placed on Friday not ship until Monday?

Carriers do not pick up on weekends or deliver on Sundays, so a refrigerated parcel dispatched Friday would spend the weekend in the network — outside any reasonable packout hold. Pharmacies therefore hold Friday cold-pack orders until Monday; VetRxDirect’s published FAQ states this policy explicitly.

How should pet insulin look when it arrives?
