Temperature bands in animal health: refrigerated, frozen, cryogenic — and what actually ships in a parcel
Animal health runs on three temperature bands, and only one of them is a parcel market. Refrigerated, 2–8°C, holds nearly everything a clinic, pharmacy, or retailer mails: USDA-licensed vaccines (whose labels state 2–8°C by regulation), the monoclonal antibody injectables, the veterinary insulins, and compounded preparations. Frozen, around −80°C, is a small emerging lane — its flagship is a distributor-operated ultra-low-temperature network built for a veterinary stem-cell therapy awaiting FDA conditional approval. Cryogenic, liquid nitrogen below −150°C, covers cell-associated poultry vaccines and livestock genetics — dewar logistics that never touch an insulated box.
The punchline for anyone buying packaging: the addressable veterinary parcel band is the same 2–8°C as human pharmacy’s controlled cold temperature. The engineering, the validation methods, and the packouts transfer directly.
Cold chain vendors love to make animal health sound thermally exotic — three bands, cryogenic tails, special everything. The map is genuinely three bands. But the market is not evenly spread across them, and mistaking the map for the market leads to buying packaging for lanes you will never ship. Here is where everything actually lives.

Refrigerated: where nearly everything lives
The 2–8°C band dominates by regulatory design, not coincidence. Every USDA-licensed biologic label carries a “storage temperature recommendation for the biological product stated as 2 to 8 °C or 35 to 46 °F, or both,” because 9 CFR 112.2(a)(4) requires exactly that statement — which puts the entire vaccine category in the refrigerator by default. The FDA-regulated side of the cabinet reads the same. Cytopoint’s package insert: “Store in a refrigerator (2°C–8°C). Do not freeze” (Zoetis). Vetsulin’s label: “Store in an upright position under refrigeration at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze” (DailyMed). And Librela’s product information is unusually direct about the part most labels leave implicit:
“Store and transport refrigerated (2°C–8°C). Do not freeze.”

Transport refrigerated. The label does not stop applying when the product leaves a building. Compounded veterinary preparations complete the set, living under USP <659>’s controlled cold temperature definition — the same 2–8°C, with a bounded transit-excursion allowance covered in the <659> post. Vaccines, three classes of biologic injectable, insulins, compounded preparations: one band, one packout problem.
Frozen: a small lane that just got its first flagship
Between the refrigerator and liquid nitrogen sits a band animal health has historically barely used. (USP <659> defines “freezer” storage as −25 to −10°C; the veterinary lane now emerging runs much colder.) The signal event: Gallant, developer of a ready-to-use veterinary stem-cell therapy, announced a partnership with the distributor MWI Animal Health — part of Cencora — to build what trade press described as the first ultra-low-temperature cold chain distribution network in veterinary medicine: −80°C controlled storage and shipping from a Kansas hub, with overnight delivery across the continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico (Today’s Veterinary Business, 2026). The product, an allogeneic stem-cell therapy for feline chronic gingivostomatitis, was at announcement still awaiting an anticipated FDA conditional approval.
Note the shape of that solution: it is not a parcel product a pharmacy buys. Ultra-low temperature in transit means dry ice or engineered deep-frozen systems, hazmat handling rules, and distributor infrastructure — a hub, a network, a controlled last leg. If veterinary cell therapies multiply, this lane grows; but it grows as distribution infrastructure, not as a box you stock in a back room. A clinic’s interaction with it will be receiving, not shipping.
Cryogenic: dewars, not boxes
The coldest band predates all of this and is enormous in volume terms — and it has never been a parcel market. Two industries live there:
- Cell-associated poultry vaccines. Marek’s disease vaccines of the cell-associated type are frozen, living, cell-bound products: Merck Animal Health’s Rismavac is labeled for storage in a liquid nitrogen container below −150°C (−238°F), with the instruction that thawed product must never be refrozen (Merck Animal Health, Rismavac product information). These move from manufacturer to hatchery in LN2 shipping dewars on scheduled logistics — hatcheries, not mailboxes.
- Livestock genetics. Bull semen and embryos live in vacuum-insulated liquid nitrogen tanks; nitrogen boils at −320°F, which is what holds a genetics inventory for years (University of Missouri Extension, publication G2002). The tank is the cold chain — refilled on a nitrogen route service, moved as a tank, never packed out.
The bands below freezing get conflated constantly, and the equipment does not transfer between them. A −20°C freezer, a −80°C ultra-low program, and a −196°C nitrogen dewar are three different technologies with three different logistics models. When a product brief says “frozen,” get the number before you get a quote — nothing designed for one of these bands is evidence of competence in another.
The punchline: the vet parcel band is human pharmacy’s band
Strip away the exotic tails and look at what actually goes into an insulated parcel in animal health: refrigerated product, 2–8°C, never frozen, riding residential lanes with porch dwell at the end. That is, to the degree, the specification for human pharmacy’s controlled cold temperature under USP <659>. The consequence cuts both ways:
- Nothing about veterinary parcels requires special packaging science. A packout chamber-tested to hold 2–8°C through a summer profile does not know whether the vial inside is semaglutide or swine vaccine. Qualification methods, refrigerant conditioning, seasonal variants — all transfer intact.
- Nothing about veterinary parcels excuses lower standards, either. The absence of a regulatory shipper mandate downstream in animal health (see who regulates your veterinary cold chain) changes who enforces the temperature — not what the temperature is.

What temperature band do most veterinary products ship in?
Refrigerated, 2–8°C (35–46°F). USDA-licensed vaccine labels state that range by regulation (9 CFR 112.2(a)(4)), and the labels of the major biologic injectables and veterinary insulins specify the same band with a do-not-freeze instruction. It is effectively the only band served by insulated parcel shipping.
Is there a frozen (−80°C) parcel market in animal health?
Barely, and not as a parcel market a pharmacy participates in. The first ultra-low-temperature veterinary distribution network — announced for a stem-cell therapy awaiting FDA conditional approval — is distributor-operated infrastructure with overnight delivery from a central hub. Clinics receive from that lane; they do not ship into it.
Why do poultry vaccines need liquid nitrogen instead of a freezer?
Cell-associated Marek’s-type vaccines are living, cell-bound preparations that exist only in a deep-frozen state: labeling directs storage in liquid nitrogen below −150°C and prohibits refreezing once thawed. A conventional freezer is not cold enough, and an insulated parcel is not in the conversation — the lane is dewar freight to hatcheries.
Do any veterinary products ship without cold chain at all?
Yes — products labeled for room-temperature storage, including many oral solids and compounded capsules and chews. But “room temperature” is itself a band (USP <659> controlled room temperature: 20–25°C, excursions 15–30°C), and ordinary parcels leave it routinely in summer and winter, so CRT product on hard lanes still warrants insulation.
Is veterinary 2–8°C the same standard as human pharmacy 2–8°C?
Numerically identical. Veterinary labels and USP’s controlled cold temperature definition specify the same range, and the parcel environment is the same. The difference is enforcement: human pharmacy distribution has USP <1079>-derived expectations pulled in by states and accreditors, while animal health relies on labels and voluntary practice. The packaging that satisfies one satisfies the other.
